Chapter 13

The blood of a living stone

Gloria and Dutch joined us for dinner that evening. By the time we finished eating, everyone except Clyde, who had business that had kept him in town, was up-to-date on the events from earlier in the day.

“Well, now that you’ve got the pixie armor figured out, what’s next?” Sam asked.

“Now I need to figure out a way to keep the rest of you safe.”

“I don’t know if I could rock armor like the pixies can. And in this heat? I’ll take my chances, thanks.” Tess pushed her plate away and sat back in her chair.

Sam gave me a quizzical look. “You want us to wear armor?”

“No! I’m thinking of rings or pendants or . . . something. I’m not sure. But, I’m worried about the attacks. If I can figure out how to Make something that will warn you or protect you somehow, I would feel better about you guys going into town. I just haven’t worked it out in my head yet.”

“The talisman magick would work for that, wouldn’t it?” Tess asked. “Too bad we don’t know how to get blood from a stone.”

Dutch looked at Tess sharply. “What did you say?”

“Which part? The Talisman magick? Or blood from a stone? The book said living stone, but that just sounds crazy.”

“About that.” Sam reached down and pulled out a notebook, along with a sheaf of papers. She passed the papers down her side of the table and handed a small stack to me to give to Dutch and Gloria.

I raised a questioning brow at Zara. As if I need them, was the response I got.

“I had the research team search living stone and old ones in the library and databases. This is what they came up with. I haven’t had a chance to do more than glance at it, myself.”

We were all silent as we read. I could see Zara’s tail twitching in irritation out of the corner of my eye.

Dutch snorted. “Well, I’ll be.” He set the papers down. “Clyde is going to get a kick out of all of this.”

“How so?” Sam asked, looking up from her own papers.

“Our mistress—the witch who Made us—was obsessed with finding one of these after she lost her familiar in a battle with the Turned. We thought she was nuts. Well, she did go a bit mad after losing him, and she really was kind of crazy, to start with,” he mused. “None of the old ones have been seen for centuries, from what we heard. They supposedly died out a long time ago. She seemed convinced otherwise for some reason.”

Neither horse shifter spoke of their origins very often. This was probably the most either had said regarding their background since they’d shown up. It still astonished me that anyone, powerful witch or otherwise, could simply create a shifter like Dutch out of a common draft horse. Making magickal Items was one thing, but what had happened to them felt too close to playing God. Though with The Powers having made an appearance, to say I was confused would be an understatement.
